"BUTUAN CITY: Reflections of its Past, Lessons for the Future - |
|
Last week, the National Commission on Culture and Arts (NCCA) sent to Butuan Atty. Rose Beatrix Angeles, Commissioner for Monuments & Sites, and Architect Richard Bautista of the Heritage Affairs Office, for a reconnaissance survey of the Butuan Archaeological Sites. The latter is in the Tentative List for the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Together with Engr. Edgardo Sanchez and Fr. Joesilo Amalla, we took them on a tour of the sites, including a rivercruise aboard the city's large speedboat as our waterways are the natural setting of this ancient trading harbour. There is really so much to be done, but we're taking the right steps. The forthcoming WHS master plan is sure to be very stringent, but I believe this is going to be good for Butuan as this will force us finally to improve our sites or get out of the competition. |
